Joey Aich is a frequent visitor here at The Juke Joint but joining us this time, he has brought along a friend. January of this year, Joey Aich and Dave Zup released a joint project titled, Duo. A vivid hip hop album that explores the desires of stardom, respect, hard work and the thin line between friendships and acquaintances. The biggest thing that stands out about Aich is his inclination to make good music and his admiration for the art form. So, choosing to make a joint project is something I am sure he thought carefully of. Dave Zup compliments the music and takes up just the right amount of space. The two bounce off each other similar to hearing some of our favorite commercial joint albums. With Zup’s raspy voice and Aich’s ability to zone in on topics with such precision, this album is a project that must be heard more than once.

There are some pure hip hop joints on Duo as well as some tracks that will get your hips swaying. Instantly, we are captivated by the intro song, Find a Friend. “I believe that nearly 90% of all of the relationships we have that we call friendships are really acquaintances. . .” Over a jazzy/hip-hop style beat, both tackle an Aristotle debate displaying their ability to speak on subjects with some substance and remain extremely relatable. Moving into the second track, the leading single, Lookin4u has an up-tempo rhythm and is paired with the lovely vocals of Meg Paulsen and Allen Way. Lookin4u feels like it a hipster art event where all the “cool” kids hang out or feels great for one of your favorite workouts. Give this track a spin and tell me what you think.

The rest of the project slows down and allows the listener to fully digest their lyrics and starts again with just the instrumentals. With blind fate I just write my vision.” “I was indie in Cleveland before the name change.” The instrumental tracks allows the listener to digest the music with a different perspective and can even be used for your own in car freestyles.
