FIRST TIME:

JIMI HENDRIX

BLUES/ROCK

(3 Minute Read)

I guess my first memory of Jimi Hendrix would be watching the film, Crooklyn. A Spike Lee film I used to watch as a child. There is a scene in the movie where Troy, the main character, is walking home from the store and Hey Joe is playing as she walks home. The song provided emotion for the scene and burned a memory into my brain.  At the time I did not know anything about Jimi, but I knew that song was very special. Fast forward to high school and I am fully in love with music and really discovered Jimi. I started reading about his amazing skills. Like him being self-taught, playing with his teeth or learning to play upside down due to the fact he only had a right handed guitar and he was left handed. I started to fall in love with his appearance and his bluesy yet rock filled music. I found him to be the coolest guy I had ever seen. I loved his way of being and Hendrix is the sole reason I fell in love with guitar and even started to learn to play. But what is most amazing about Jimi is his ability to make himself just as ordinary as we all are. In an interview on the Dick Cavett Show (1969), he talks about not being able to take a compliment, “because you know really the truth.” It is this way of thinking that engulfed me to learn what kind of man he was.

It was during my high school years I learned of his time at the best festival the world has ever seen, Woodstock.  Check out his famous star spangled banner performance below.

Today, Jimi Hendrix is regarded as one of the greatest guitarist of all time. Songs like Voodoo Child, Red House and Bold As Love have been remade by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Prince and John Mayer. He will be remembered for decades if not centuries as one of the best to ever do it. If you ever get the chance, learn more about his life story. It truly is fascinating.

Tell us your story of the first time you heard the legend and how he impacted your life? What is your favorite Jimi Hendrix song?
