J. Cole
Might Delete Later

Hip Hop

It has been one hell of a start to the summer. April, The Juke Joint wrote about the disappointment in J. Cole’s decision to drop out of the rap beef between him and Kendrick Lamar. Calling it a let down to Hip Hop. Today, I stand firmly with that feeling. Looking at how things turned out I see why Cole might of made that decision. But I also feel this was a time for him to display his talent with the art of rap. I feel things go a little gossipy due to Drake and his feminine energy. I think if Cole and Kendrick went at it, it would have stayed at who the better rapper is. Things got really personal and Cole seems like he is not the type of man to talk about other peoples families. Even Kendrick seems like a man of good character, but he also seems as one not to fuck with, and he proved it. It now has become hard to listen to Cole when he brags how he will murder any rapper that wants to challenge his art. I instantly think, “nah.” But that does not stop me from listening to his music. Which brings me to, Might Delete Later.

Introduction is fire. I never thought I would hear Gucci Mane speaking on an intro. But it paired perfectly. And the long forgotten Young Dro was a surprise as well. Introduction on an albums are still very important and I am happy to see Cole and a few other still take it seriously. Moving into Crocodile Tearz, I secretly was waiting to hear the full track. As well as Huntin’ Wabbitz. His flow on each of these tracks is attractive and can easily become someone’s favorite. The tracks with Bas aren’t very impressive. Especially, H.Y.B. The UK sound just doesn’t do it for me. One extremely annoying track is Fever. Like, why? His singing so unnecessary and even the content didn’t feel heart felt.

Production on the album is quite good. Some heavy hitter producers on the album include T-Minus on tracks like Pricey, Crocodile Tearz and Huntin’ Wabbitz. Alchemist makes an appearance on Stickz N Stones and Mike WiLL Made-It for 3001. Even Daylyt who seems to making headlines again produced the track Pi featuring himself and Ab-Soul.

Cole seemed to be playing a small game on the mixtape. Its features and names of some of the tracks that make me wonder if he low key is sneak dissing. He has a way of doing that and pretending like he’s just making music. And with his apology, it’s almost unacceptable now. But hey, what do I know?

This is probably one of the lowest ratings I have ever given J. Cole. It may be in part to his apology or it may be just an off project. Still, find it worth a listen. Will it last? Only time will tell.
