If there’s one thing us ’90s kids can all agree on, it’s that we had some of the best cartoons ever to come to television. “Three o’clock, rush home, doin’ All That like the TV show,” raps Nick Samps as he brings us into a familiar story many ’90s kids experienced. We are the generation caught between pre- and post-internet. We know how to entertain ourselves, but we also know how to navigate a rapidly advancing world.

The cartoons weren’t just entertaining—they were educational. We had our own version of Saturday Night Live, but for kids. Because of this, I think growing up in that era gave us an advantage in many ways. And that brings us to the music.

Nick Samps takes full advantage of this ’90s nostalgia with his latest project, Nick at Nite. The opening track, “98 NICK,” reminds us just how lucky we were to grow up in one of the greatest decades. Throughout the project, there’s also a bittersweet undertone that reflects on lost friends and simpler times. It represents a kind of growth many of us are hesitant to step into, but must face anyway.

From child to grown man, Nick Samps completes the project by expressing his passion for music, the hardships of living in a city like Cleveland, and the drive to push toward a dream. Much of this inspiration seems rooted in his time watching classic Nickelodeon cartoons.

Production by Moon Man is consistent and refreshing, carrying a darker undertone that reflects the reality of today’s world. One artist paired with one producer allows for a cohesive, full-length project—something we don’t see very often anymore. Samps’ raspy voice helps bring the entire album to life.
