Super Bowl LIX

The day after a controversial performance feels kind of like the day before an off day. It’s a little better. Watching the internet interpret all the symbolism and the jabs at Drake is a bit hilarious. But what Kendrick Lamar did last night for the Superbowl goes deeper than rap. “The revolution bout to be televised, you picked the right time but the wrong guy.” I disagree, he is the perfect guy. It has been decades since we (the black community) have seen a leader like Mr. Duckworth, and he has had the same agenda since day one. I just hope your eyes and ears are open this time.

This half time show felt a lot like his For Free? video from 2016, only on a larger platform and a bigger voice. The New Orleans setting, the use of Uncle Sam, the symbolism with the American flag and their continuation to discredit the black American contribution to the construction of the United States. Kendrick moves with intention. Even to his final move on Drake. Kendrick gets the last laugh performing two of the five diss tracks, “walking his enemy down with a poker face.” Check mate.

However you have received his message, Kendrick made yet another statement that goes beyond the bars. His passion for the art form and his devotion to black culture and the preservation of our Black American history is breath taking.

Thank you, Kendrick Lamar for you art.
