HIP-HOP

The Florida MC, Doechii released probably one of the best Hip Hop albums/mixtapes of 2024. Sitting at a brown rectangle table Phil and Jewels listen intensely to each rhyme, clap, and drum as she spits about trauma, men and being the best in the game. “She talkin’ stupid on this shit,” smiled phil while listening to track number 2, Bullfrog. Pause track 2.
Phil: When is the first time you heard Doechii?

Jewels: First time I heard of her was 2019. I seen she was signed to TDE. First time I heard the music would be this year, 2024 with this album here.

Phil: First time I heard her was Nissan Altima. Like I heard her name floating around but I didn’t pay much attention. My attention span can be shit.

Jewels: What song had you like, this album is fire?

Phil: Bullfrog! But she showed me she could rap early on. They consider this alternative hip hop album. But I think she a mix of Tyler the creator and Kendrick Lamar. She shows she can do both.

Pausing every two to three songs to exchange questions. At Hide and Seek, Phil points out how much she emulates Kendrick Lamar. Then Bloom starts. A song that resonated with the both of us. With a message of how much stress chasing your dream can be.
Jewels: Pause this. What did that song say to you?

Phil: It had me questioning my own priorities. How to compartmentalize life and the things we want to do without jeopardizing our sanity. How to become successful and how to find a balance.
Production. The "boom bap", everything she embodies are heard and felt. This sounds like a full-length album buts a mixtape. It’s actually music. The music is there. It’s not the same pattern or rhyme and its put together very well. Some producers include Devin Malik and Kal Banx. There are tracks for just cruising and there are tracks to turn up to. Very well balanced.

“I’m making peace with the fact I’m going pop and shit I’m making pop and shit but I’m still poppin shit.”
Phil: She’s staying true to herself. She is not afraid to admit she is not making the music she would prefer.
Jewels: I love all the confidence she has!
Overall, this album is a work of art. All the subject's she touches on throughout the album are relatable, passionate and gives hope for Hip Hop fans.
